There are plenty of books on the market about grant writing, you might want to check one or more out. You can also look at the resources available at The Foundation Center – http://www.foundationcenter.org There is a lot of good information on the site about grants, funders and more, but you might want to start with the free online course on proposal writing at http://foundationcenter.org/getstarted/tutorials/shortcourse/index.html
As to building credibility, nothing works like success – you will need to have a history of successful grant writing to get contracts, and the best way to get experience is to get a job at a nonprofit org. as a grant or development associate for a year or so – you can build your experience and skills before you go solo.

Question by Kelli: Grant writing services. Do they really work? Any first hand experiences?
I have attempted to write grants in the past without success. I have an opportunity to sign up with a service that includes online coaching and a step-by-step instruction. They also help in submitting your grant to foundations. My question is about how well the services work. Has anyone really been able to get money without hiring a grant writer? (This is for a non-profit to help single mom’s get their education.) Thank you for any information you can give.

First, make it clear to your potential employer that you have no experience in writing grant proposals; it is a highly specialized area of technical writing. Inform you potential employer that you would need training in this field.
Second, even if your employer does not offer training in writing grant proposals, take the training yourself. Experienced, quality grant writers can make as much as $ 140/hour. (Yes, I said One Hundred Forty dollars an hour).
Third, every organization that accepts grant proposals has stringent requirements for form and content. FOLLOW THEM.
I heard a story of a grant writer who visited a judging seminar (as a judge) to choose the grants for a society. When they started, the head judge pulled out a proposal; announced the name of the organization (and title of the proposal) and dropped the proposal in the trash without reading it, and told the group to scratch that proposal off the list because it was improperly formatted. The grant writer was quietly embarrassed because had written it.
Groups and foundations typically receive many more proposals than they can fund.
The first item they sort for is format, without reading the document.
Organizations that make grants will make public the standards required to receive the grant. If you do not follow those standards, you are wasting your time.
