Question by tcroberts2000: I am in need of a high quality grant management software program, where might I find one?
I am working with non profit organizations and a college in a new clinical health research program. It looks like we will recive a significant grant and it will require reporting and accounting management. If you know of a software program that can help us please post any details here.
Thank you

Q&A: How realistic is it to get need based grants if your parents make 70K a year and?

1 Comment 25 April 2012

Question by Huntsman: How realistic is it to get need based grants if your parents make 70K a year and?
This is NOT a personal question – just learning how all this works.

They had no mortgage
No car loans

But.. .absolutely NOTHING in savings.
The school is about 20K a year for room and board.

NO need for loans of any kind.
Just asking about grants – really – how dirt poor do you have to be to get grants.
Again – NOT LOANS.
Loans are the easiest things to get in the world – grant info is what I’m after.

You have no chance of getting a federal or state grant based on your parents being poor. They make too much money. Besides, if you have “no need for loans of any kind” then that should be a good indication to you they are not poor.

How much they have in debt (or not) does not matter. (house, car). It also does not matter that you are choosing a school that costs 20K a year.

Grants are not hard to get if you are poor. You are not…. so it will be impossible.

How to apply and get the grants that you need?

1 Comment 24 March 2012

Question by Edwin M: How to apply and get the grants that you need?
My friend told me about a website that has info on how to receive grants. My friend applied and received grants to open a soccer complex, which is currently in construction and he received government grants for all this. I also applied for some grants, i didn’t get all of them, but i received most the one’s i applied for. The information on this website is priceless and if you are looking for grants, you should definitely check this website out. The site costs 14.99 for the info, but it’s worth it. www.thegovtgrants.com. Any questions? feel free to ask or email me at tosh222000@yahoo.com. Thank you.
This site gives you information on how to find and write applications. So it will save you the money of hiring a writer.

Ok, me and someone else have decided to open a small buisness, and we were wondering how we could get small buisness grants or grants period (free money to help start are buisness). I also wanted to know the problems with loans, how I could get cheaper loans and what loaners are the best.

You stand a greater chance of getting a government-guaranteed loan through the Small Business Administration http://www.sba.gov/financing than a government grant. Read the SBA Financing page to learn about criteria needed for borrowing

Some banks extend what they call “small business lines of credit” often through credit cards. Those are easier to get and can be based on your credit history alone. They typically are up to $ 100,000. For example, Wachovia’s has various business lines of credits http://www.wachovia.com/small_biz/page/0,,446_612_1399,00.html Their business line of credit can even be approved overnight,

It is hard to find grants to start a business. Unlike the myths that some perpetuate, federal government and even private foundations hardly give grant money for a for-profit business. And yes, grants mean PAPERWORK – lots and lots of it, that is why a cottage industry of grant writers was born.

Nonetheless, you can go to the Catalog of Federal Domestic Assistance (CFDA) http://www.cfda.gov and Grants.gov http://www.grants.gov – these are two sites created by the federal government to provide transparency and information on grants. Browse through the listings and see if you can find any grant that would support a for-profit venture.

Even SBA does NOT give out grants. From the SBA website http://www.sba.gov/mostrequesteditems/CON_FAQ2.html

“The U.S. Small Business Administration does not offer grants to start or expand small businesses, although it does offer a wide variety of loan programs. (See http://www.sba.gov/financing for more information) While SBA does offer some grant programs, these are generally designed to expand and enhance organizations that provide small business management, technical, or financial assistance. These grants generally support non-profit organizations, intermediary lending institutions, and state and local governments.”

Here is a listing of federal grants for small businesses. See if there is any available for individuals for starting a business — THERE’S NONE.

http://12.46.245.173/pls/portal30/CATALOG.BROWSE_BENEF_RPT.show

Most of the federal grants are given to specific target groups with specific requirements (e.g. minority business owners involved in transportation related contracts emanating from DOT – Grant#20.905 Disadvantaged Business Enterprises Short Term Lending Program

Grants are also often given to non profit groups or organizations involved in training or other similar activities (grant 59.043 Women’s Business Ownership Assistance that are given to those who will create women’s business center that will train women entrepreneurs

I suggest you read the following books to get ideas of how to finance your business:

The SBA Loan Book http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/ASIN/158062202X/powerhomebizguid
Angel Capital : How to Raise Early-Stage Private Equity Financing http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/ASIN/0471690635/powerhomebizguid
Financing Your Small Business (Barron’s Business Library Series) http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/ASIN/0764124897/powerhomebizguid

For private grants, you may want to check the Foundation Center’s Foundation Grants for Individuals Online http://gtionline.fdncenter.org . It’s a subscription based website ($ 9.95 per month) but their opening blurb only says that the database is ideal for “students, artists, academic researchers, libraries and financial aid offices.” Entrepreneurs are apparently not one of them, so I take it they also don’t have listings of private foundations who give grants to would-be entrepreneurs.

Tax Guidelines for Medical Industry Jobseekers: MedZilla Details What You Need to Know Before You File

Seattle, WA (PRWEB) February 07, 2012

Many Americans spent at least part of last year looking for a job. Whether unemployed or under employed, they likely sent their resume out to someone. Now is the opportunity to cash in those itemized deductions from expenses accumulated during job searches. Perhaps it seems counterintuitive that there would be anything useful to account for during tax time from a period when not actually working. However, whether a job was found or not, those miscellaneous expenses could be a key to maximizing your refund.

Stay Within The Field — The first thing to keep in mind before sorting receipts is that for the job search to be deductible, it has to be within a field of expertise. What this means is that no matter what the deductible expense may be, it needs to be related to a job search within the most recent field, or the industry a candidate ultimately ended up finding a job in.

Don’t Forget to Include Electronic Receipts — There are many ways to provide the IRS with proper accounts of purchases. One way continually getting overlooked are the receipts located and easily downloaded from accounts accessible online. Electronic bank, credit card and bill statements are legitimate and verifiable receipts which can be printed and submitted for audit. So don’t go diving forehead first onto the desktop if paper receipts are not available.

If there are months of records beyond what is available instantly online, corporations are required to keep that data available. There may be a nominal fee for having a paper copy sent; however, any money spent getting records of expenditures for tax purposes will be deductible on next year’s return.

Expenses in Keeping Up with the Industry — Was money spent on seminars, classes or second degrees to keep up with the latest trends? How about joining an industry or professional association; renewing a license; paying for a subscription to any industry journals or a trade magazine? Start making a list; because dues, fees, and even money paid to, or expenses incurred from, a professional head hunter (including job boards) are all deductible. Make a note, however, that there are certain kinds of fees which are not deductible. For example, fees you paid for acquiring your initial medical or dental license are not deductible.

Proceed With Caution — Remember documents should demonstrate that the job search began relatively soon after the termination of previous employment. Also, since deductions related to the search for a new job fall under what are considered “Miscellaneous Expenses”, they are subject to the 2% rule. This means that the total amount deducted as a result of these expenses must not exceed 2% of total income.

Things Many May Not Realise They Can Include:

Resume Writing Services: If someone was paid to spruce up a resume, that expense can be deducted. Feel free to splurge on the nice paper and envelopes, because they’re deductible too.

If acting as an employment agency, feel free to include all of those office supply expenses relating to searches. Postage; copies made of resumes and cover letters; paper; ink and whatever other materials purchased for the creation of portfolios (headshots and digital recordings, for example) may also be deducted.

Transportation expenses incurred going to and from job interviews or while looking for a job can be deducted just as well as those incurred while doing errands as an employee.

Remember to make detailed notes on statements and receipts to keep track of which expenses were related to the job search in case of an audit. If you have any questions or for more ideas on which items are officially deductible, consult a tax preparation professional (those expenses will be eligible for deduction next year). Also, make it a point to look over Publication 529 on irs.gov, which outlines the specifics on Miscellaneous Deductions and exceptions to the 2% rule.

Figuring out the specifics on miscellaneous deductions can seem daunting. Many are tempted to save themselves the trouble. However, hundreds or thousands of dollars could be at stake for merely a couple hours of work. Be sure to take advantage of these deductions!

Hi,

Great post! I had the same grant question a few months ago. It’s really tricky to find out about this stuff on the net, but my wife bought me special special software (CD) for my birthday. The program rocks for finding the grant info you want. btw…this is the software that was featured on CNBC and in USA Today.

This company is giving away the software free (only $ 3.95 for shipping)!!!!!!!
Here’s the link

What is a good resource for single mothers who need grants for continuing education?

2 Comments 19 February 2012

Question by Lucy: What is a good resource for single mothers who need grants for continuing education?
I’m looking to go back to college, I graduated back in 2003. I’m a single mom and I work one full time job. I’ve been searching for grants that can help me further my education and I’ve applied for the pell grant and another one. But that leaves me about 5,000 short for school. I don’t want to have to apply for a loan because I know they check credit and that takes off points on my credit score. Does anyone know of any charities, business, government grants or scholarships that award or give money for college? I don’t know if it helps but my major is digital movie production.

If you have your bachelor’s degree already, you do not qualify for the Pell Grant at all. The Pell Grant pretty much pays for one degree. However, there are scholarships out there. If you are planning on attending graduate school, there is the research or graduate assistant programs which pays for your tuition and a monthly stipend. I will include some free resources below to find money for college. Good luck!

What are some grants / scholarships / loans a person can get on an emergency ASAP need?

2 Comments 17 February 2012

Question by Blair: What are some grants / scholarships / loans a person can get on an emergency ASAP need?
I just found out my university royally d*cked me over because they never told me my financial awards from them are only good for 4 years. Besides speaking to my school’s Dean for my financial advisor’s lack of communication skills, I am wanting to know what are some good grants or scholarships that anyone knows that can give away money on “emergency” based need (e.g. where I was unable to apply for their grant/scholarship by their deadline [like June] because then I had no idea I would be short on money, and now I just found out so I’d need money right away). I already have too many loans on my parents’ names (PLUS loans) from banks, and I am uneligible for loans in copious amounts from banks under my name since I have no credit history.

Deadlines are the issue here. Most financial aid program deadlines have already passed. You could try a private student loan and have your parents act as a co-signor since you have no credit history. Since there are no deadlines for them you can apply anytime.

There are a couple of places you might try…

Chase Bank has a private student loan option, http://www.usadegrees.com/chase/ use the online application as it goes to a different center than if you call. The inbound call center people are good, but you’ll do better by dealing with the online group they really seem to be on the ball.

But my favorite is http://www.studentloanadvisors.com really fast answers, no cost to apply, get money sent directly to you in about a week. There is an easy online request form that doesn’t require personal info.

You need to begin by filling out the FAFSA. You can do it on-line here: http://www.fafsa.ed.gov (be careful of imitators – note the .gov)
You should do this right now as many schools have priority deadlines in early March. It is easiest to do after you and your parents have completed your 2010 tax returns.
