Grant Crisis Q&A

Does Canada have a national Chess competition where the Provinces compete?

1 Comment 19 May 2012

Question by Eric S: Does Canada have a national Chess competition where the Provinces compete?
If Not, I have an idea.

We have 8 evenly matched Chess Teams

1) Newfoundland & Labrador
2) Nova Scotia
3) Prince Edward Island & New Brunswick
4) Quebec
5) Ontario
6) Manitoba & Saskatchewan
7) Alberta & British Columbia 8) The Territories & Nunavut

First 1) plays 8). 2) plays 7) 3) plays 6), and so on….

For each team, the residents of the corresponding province elects 4 Expert Chess Players.

For each move in each game, the 4 expert chess players select independent options such as (move the knight 2 spaces, attack the queen, take out rook, etc)

Then an audience show of hands, votes which move to make.

The Champion province(s) for the whole tournament gets grant money to their provincial government from Ottawa.

Would this not be fun and ultimately Democratic???
The population won’t be exactly even, so we can just make adjustments to the amount of the grant based on who wins.

If Ontario wins you give them a little more because there’s more people.

Answer by X
they do, the easiest way is public school system, you face schools then go on to the provincials; private does that to but less of a chance, aldults can also play chess and compete against provincial

Answer by Krishi
My concern with National Grants conferences is that they encourage the perpetuation of the belief that anyone and everyone can get grants — which is absolutely false. True, grants given by the government are increasing, but whether anyone can get them for whatever purpose is highly debatable.

If you want information on grants, you can go to the Catalog of Federal Domestic Assistance (CFDA) http://www.cfda.gov and Grants.gov http://www.grants.gov – these are two sites created by the federal government to provide transparency and information on grants. Browse through the CFDA listings and see if you can find any grant that would support your purposes. Then apply for the grant at Grants.gov

Even if you buy books on “how to get grants” or list that supposedly has information on grants — all of them are mere rehash of what CFDA has, albeit packaged differently.

Note though that these grants generally support non-profit organizations, intermediary lending institutions, and state and local governments. Most of the federal grants are given to specific target groups with specific requirements (e.g. minority business owners involved in transportation related contracts emanating from DOT – Grant#20.905 Disadvantaged Business Enterprises Short Term Lending Program. Individuals especially for personal purposes are not eligible for federal grants.

Grants are also often given to non profit groups or organizations involved in training or other similar activities (grant 59.043 Women’s Business Ownership Assistance that are given to those who will create women’s business center that will train women entrepreneurs.

National Heritage Academies Makes the Dream of a Private School Education a Reality

Nashville, Tenn. (PRWEB) April 17, 2012

Each year, National Heritage Academies (NHA) helps thousands of young students receive a top-notch education and prepare for a successful academic career after middle school. A new NHA program, launched in March 2012, will give these students the opportunity to compete for an even bigger reward.

In partnership with International Scholarship and Tuition Services, Inc. (ISTS), NHA established the CollegeBound Scholarship, a new program that will award two eighth-grade students currently enrolled at a NHA school with a full-ride scholarship to the private high school of their choice. Applicants will be judged based on their financial need, community involvement, academic achievement and responses to three essay questions. NHA plans to announce the winners on May 1.

“National Heritage Academies is committed to preparing every student for college opportunity,” said Tari Reinink, NHA’s Chief Marketing Officer. “This is the primary reason we introduced the CollegeBound Scholars (CBS) program, which seeks to work closely with middle school students and their families to ensure they are equipped for success in both high school and college.”

The CollegeBound Scholarship is one component of the CBS program; other elements include high school guidebooks, local college tours and visits to Ivy League campuses. NHA has identified several opportunities for expansion of the scholarship program, including the addition of college scholarships and a scholarship fund for each NHA school.

In collaboration with NHA, ISTS developed an online scholarship application for the program which allows students to easily upload their academic information and essay responses. ISTS provides full-service management for NHA, including application processing, verification of applicant enrollment at a NHA school, winner selection, funds disbursement and applicant support.

“When we decided to create a scholarship program in conjunction with CBS we thought it best to outsource the scholarship process to facilitate its growth in the future, while guaranteeing it would be fair and equitable for all families and students applying. We identified ISTS as the right partner in this effort,” Reinink said.

About National Heritage Academies

National Heritage Academies (NHA) partners with community groups to build and operate K-8 tuition-free public charter schools. NHA partners with 71 schools in nine states serving more than 44,000 students. NHA schools are designed to eliminate the achievement gap and provide school choice to families while preparing children for success in high school, college and beyond. During the last five years, NHA schools have ranked in the top 25% of U.S. schools of in academic growth. For more information about National Heritage Academies, visit http://www.nhaschools.com.

Pearson Foundation Extends Multi-Year Commitment to Provide Regional and National Support for National Academy Foundation’s Public High Schools

Pearson Foundation Extends Multi-Year Commitment to Provide Regional and National Support for National Academy Foundation’s Public High Schools

San Francisco, CA (PRWEB) July 19, 2011

On the heels of President Barack Obama’s call to build strong industry-led partnerships that will transform the American education system, the Pearson Foundation today announced details of a $ 900,000 grant to extend the professional development program for high school teachers and administrators at National Academy Foundation (NAF) career-themed academies.

NAF President JD Hoye and Pearson Foundation President Mark Nieker announced the donation – the fourth such annual grant in as many years – at NAF’s 2011 Institute for Staff Development, held in San Francisco. The grant extends the Pearson Foundation’s ongoing commitment to NAF by funding NAF’s regional in-person and online professional development training for more than 1,000 NAF high school teachers.

The grant is also among the first to align with the America’s Promise Alliance Grad Nation Community Impact Fund, which was announced yesterday at the White House. The Grad Nation Community Impact Fund aims to provide grants that stimulate community engagement, business investment and partnerships to help transform the nation’s lowest-performing schools and surrounding communities. Both NAF and the Pearson Foundation are members of the America’s Promise Alliance and supporters of the Grad Nation Community Impact Fund.

“The NAF-Pearson Foundation partnership underscores all that can happen when organizations come together to serve our nation’s young people,” said Alma J. Powell, chair, America’s Promise Alliance. “NAF serves many of the nation’s lowest-performing schools and surrounding communities, yet ensures that more than 90 percent of NAF students graduate from high school. The majority of its success can be attributed directly to its teachers. Since 2008, NAF teachers have been supported by the Pearson Foundation, a terrific partner in our Alliance.”

The Pearson Foundation has supported professional development efforts for NAF teachers nationwide, focusing on helping NAF educators master the components that serve as the foundation of NAF’s exemplary learning communities. In NAF academy classrooms, teachers empower students who, in turn, manage authentic theme-based projects that develop career-ready skills required in the local business community. To do so they make use of the three key elements of NAF’s learning model: a rigorous career-based curriculum, a focus on personalized student learning, and the resources to ensure persistent, engaged support from community partners.

“This year’s grant makes it possible for NAF to further its strategy of offering hands-on professional development sessions for their teachers. It also ensures that these local experiences can be integrated and extended within a year-round online network for teacher collaboration,” explained Nieker, who is also a co-chair of the new Grad Nation Community Impact Fund. “With these elements in place, NAF can continue to improve the support it provides to its remarkable and inspiring educators and school leaders. It can also extend its model to serve new high schools, including those in communities most in need across the United States.”

“NAF students stay in high school and graduate,” said Hoye. “They do so because our teachers and school leaders have the skills and the continued training they need to engage students in authentic classroom learning experiences and industry-based internships provided by thousands of dedicated business partners that together allow young people to change the trajectory of their lives. The Pearson Foundation’s continued commitment to NAF ensures these teachers have the professional development support they need to connect their kids to real world opportunities and to prepare them successfully for college and career.”

About the National Academy Foundation

The National Academy Foundation (NAF) is an acclaimed network of career-themed academies that open doors for underserved high school students to viable careers. For nearly 30 years, NAF has refined a proven model that provides young people access to industry-specific curricula, work-based learning experiences, and relationships with business professionals. NAF academies focus on one of five career themes: finance, hospitality & tourism, information technology, engineering, and health sciences. Employees of more than 2,500 companies volunteer in classrooms, act as mentors, engage NAF students in paid internships, and serve on local Advisory Boards. Five hundred NAF academies serve 50,000 students across 40 states, D.C., and the U.S. Virgin Islands. NAF’s national graduation rate of 90% testifies to the effectiveness of this effort.

MediSend International and National Cancer Coalition Form Alliance to Strengthen Healthcare in Peru

Jhon Romero, Peruvian biomedical engineer- technician trainee, and Tom Roane, Senior VP of Alliances for the National Cancer Coalition

(PRWEB) April 03, 2012

The successful advancement of healthcare in developing countries relies on the collaboration of many agencies and organizations. MediSend International and National Cancer Coalition (NCC) are exercising their collective experience working in developing country healthcare to aid in Peru’s struggle to improve conditions for its people.

“The National Cancer Coalition is pleased to partner with MediSend,” says Tom Roane, Senior Vice President of Alliances for the National Cancer Coalition, “The strategic and complementary alignment of our programs in this country will significantly improve care for Peruvian cancer patients and will help provide opportunities for complete healthcare solutions at Peru’s principal public cancer hospital.”

Healthcare in Peru presents multiple challenges including a system without sufficient infrastructure to accommodate a country with a wide-range of serious diseases. The Peruvian government is aggressively trying to improve healthcare conditions as much as possible and is working towards advancing their medical infrastructure as well as enhancing its reach to cover more of the nation’s poor.

Peru’s Instituto Nacional de Enfermedades Neoplásicas (INEN) is best known for its specialties in clinical care, medical education in oncology, and oncology research. INEN is under the jurisdiction of the Peruvian government through the Ministry of Health. Headquartered in the capital city of Lima, INEN is the largest public cancer hospital in the country with almost 350 beds. But, like many hospitals in developing country hospital systems, INEN is in need of trained professional biomedical equipment repair technicians.

“If crucial diagnostic and therapeutic equipment cannot be repaired and maintained, outcomes are adversely affected and lives can be lost. All too frequently, we are told of such occurrences in hospitals where there is no one to repair and maintain the equipment. Hospitals with the capacity to manage their own equipment are leaders in the development of a strengthened healthcare infrastructure,” says Nick Hallack, President and CEO of MediSend.

MediSend is the leading international institute in biomedical technology education and training, and in that capacity has returned certified biomedical equipment repair technicians to hospitals in 16 countries around the world. Currently, Jhon Romero, a biomedical engineer from INEN, is participating in the 2012 Spring MediSend Biomedical Repair Training Program™ in Dallas, Texas.

Jhon will return to INEN as a certified Biomedical Equipment Technician (BMET) to help manage the maintenance and repair of the hospital’s critical biomedical equipment. He looks forward to establishing a biomedical engineering department at the hospital with his colleagues. “We hope to put our own maintenance protocols in place. We also hope to develop calibration methods for the different equipment by establishing a metrology laboratory to perform these calibrations,” he says recalling a story he read in the news about a person who died because of a blood pressure machine that was out of calibration in a Peruvian hospital. The grant for Jhon’s six-month training program has been anonymously sponsored by a US Foundation.

National Cancer Coalition, the world’s largest cancer-focused medical relief program, donates and distributes drugs and medical technology to treat people living with cancer and other serious diseases in the developing world. In a partnership with Becton, Dickinson and Company, a leading global medical technology company, NCC is conducting a cervical cancer early detection program to benefit 75,000 underserved women in rural Peru, in addition to having provided over $ 10 million in chemotherapy drugs to INEN over the past 8 years.

The partnership between MediSend and National Cancer Coalition pairs two leaders in strengthening healthcare for vulnerable populations and combines their successful implementation of programs in some of the world’s poorest countries. The collaboration in Peru is part of a larger plan for the alliance in Latin America and Ghana, Africa.

National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration Awards Florida A&M University $15 Million to Train a New Generation of Scientists

National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration Awards Florida A&M University $ 15 Million to Train a New Generation of Scientists

Tallahassee, FL (PRWEB) October 29, 2011

Florida A&M University (FAMU) has been awarded an education and research grant totaling $ 15 million from the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) to meet the agency’s workforce needs in areas of science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM) that support NOAA’s mission. This is the largest single grant awarded in the history of the University.

“One of the highest criteria used to determine the quality of a university is the level of extramural funding and quality of research taking place by faculty and the funding obtained for them to conduct research on a regular basis,” said FAMU President James H. Ammons. “This announcement proves that Florida A&M University meets that standard of excellence.”

With 30 percent of the grant designated for scholarships, FAMU has partnered with Texas A&M University-Corpus Christi, Delaware State University, Jackson State University, University of Texas at Brownsville, and Creighton University as well as three National Estuarine Research Reserves; Flower Garden Banks National Marine Sanctuary; the Gulf of Mexico Alliance; and, the Gulf of Mexico Coastal Ocean Observing System. The grant will provide funds to support students as they pursue NOAA-relevant education, research, and training in environmental science. This grant supports enhancing environmental literacy from K-12 to the doctorate level.

“Our education efforts will focus on training and graduating under-represented minorities and utilize research as a vehicle to educate students, and develop skills relevant to the new economy,” said Michael Abazinge, professor and interim director of the School of the Environment who also serves as the principal investigator for this significant award.

The award will support the NOAA Environmental Cooperative Science Center (ECSC), FAMU as the lead institution with its partners to focus on the following goals:

    Increasing the number of well-trained and highly qualified scientists and managers, particularly from under-represented minority groups entering the NOAA workforce and other resource management entities;
Improving the scientific bases for coastal resource management and to develop tools and research products to characterize, evaluate, and forecast coastal and marine ecosystem responses to natural and human induced stressors; and,
Facilitating community engagement related to the function and relevance of coastal ecosystems and the services they provide to society.

“The magnitude of this environmentally-focused research and training award is critical to our region, nation and to the world, as we develop best practices to govern us in all areas of our existence,” said K. Ken Redda, professor and acting vice president for research.

The ECSC was established in 2001 at FAMU through a national competitive process. This five-year award was made to a team of academic institutions led by FAMU. Through this award, ECSC will increase the number of scientists, particularly from under-represented minority groups in environmental, coastal, and oceanic sciences. Of the over 180 postsecondary student participants, ECSC has graduated 19 Ph.D. degree recipients, 41 master’s degree holders, and 56 bachelor’s degree recipients, since 2006. Graduates of ECSC, a part of FAMU’s School of the Environment, has a 100 percent placement rate. Eight are working as employees of NOAA, while others are employed by state or other governmental employees or as researchers in university settings.

“We’re committed to developing problem-solving skills as we engage undergraduate majors and graduate students from varied disciplines, including biology, chemistry, physics, math and other STEM areas needed to address and resolve environmental issues,” said Charles H. Jagoe, distinguished professor in the School of the Environment.

Those problem-solving skills are being put to use in the laboratories in the School of the Environment.

Currently, two students, LaTrisha Allen and Kali Farris, are conducting research under the leadership of Jagoe. Allen, a second-year Ph.D. research student, and Kali Farris, a third-year master’s degree student majoring in environmental science marine toxicology, are examining and conducting different analysis of several fish species to determine their exposure to the oil released in the BP Oil Spill.

This grant will also provide educational opportunities for students and teachers in the local K-12 school districts through summer workshops, Brain Bowl competitions and others enrichment activities. K-12 student participants will learn how environmental decisions impact the social and economic structure of their communities.

The Environmental Sciences Institute, which is currently referred to as the School of the Environment, was established in 1995 and became a school in 2011. It is one of several new innovative programs at Florida A&M University. The FAMU School of the Environment is a multidisciplinary unit that offers a wide range of services to students, governmental agencies, private sector companies, communities and other organizations.

The grant awarded to the School of the Environment is budgeted over the next five years, ending on June 30, 2016. For more information on NOAA’s Environmental Cooperative Science Center at Florida A&M University visit http://www.ecsc.famu.edu.
