What are some good visual artist grants for women?

1 Comment 20 April 2012

Question by sallymknz: What are some good visual artist grants for women?
Hello!

I am searching for visual artist grants of any amount that can be used toward a publication (ie: catalog, monographs, book, etc). The grant does not have to be for female artists specifically, just a plus.

I am located in Seattle, in case that matters.

I am no longer a student.

I would also appreciate any information on any databases where I can search, myself. Thank you!

Try the Seattle Office of Arts & Cultural affairs:

http://www.seattle.gov/arts/opportunities/default.asp

You can also search our website free; you would need to log into the database and select the category “Arts, Culture & Humanities” in Washington State. Then you can use keywords to narrow your search.

Yes there are grants for schools, but NOT for starting a business contrary to what you heard

You can check about Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) http://www.fafsa.ed.gov/ or the Federal Pell Grant http://studentaid.ed.gov/students/public…

It is hard to find grants to start a business. Unlike the myths that some perpetuate, federal government and even private foundations hardly give grant money for a for-profit business. And yes, grants mean PAPERWORK – lots and lots of it, that is why a cottage industry of grant writers was born.

Nonetheless, you can go to the Catalog of Federal Domestic Assistance (CFDA) http://www.cfda.gov and Grants.gov http://www.grants.gov – these are two sites created by the federal government to provide transparency and information on grants. Browse through the listings and see if you can find any grant that would support a for-profit venture.

Even if you buy books on “how to get grants” or list that supposedly has information on grants — all of them are mere rehash of what CFDA has, albeit packaged differently. But still the info is the same – hardly any grants for starting a for profit business.

Even SBA does NOT give out grants. From the SBA website http://www.sba.gov/expanding/grants.html…

“The U.S. Small Business Administration does not offer grants to start or expand small businesses, although it does offer a wide variety of loan programs. (See http://www.sba.gov/financing for more information) While SBA does offer some grant programs, these are generally designed to expand and enhance organizations that provide small business management, technical, or financial assistance. These grants generally support non-profit organizations, intermediary lending institutions, and state and local governments.”

Here is a listing of federal grants for small businesses. See if there is any available for individuals for starting a business — THERE’S NONE.

http://12.46.245.173/pls/portal30/catalo…

Most of the federal grants are given to specific target groups with specific requirements (e.g. minority business owners involved in transportation related contracts emanating from DOT – Grant#20.905 Disadvantaged Business Enterprises Short Term Lending Program

Grants are also often given to non profit groups or organizations involved in training or other similar activities (grant 59.043 Women’s Business Ownership Assistance that are given to those who will create women’s business center that will train women entrepreneurs

What would be a good grant proposal involving stem cells research?

Question by deltaroo420: What would be a good grant proposal involving stem cells research?
I need to write a fairly simple grant proposal for the biology department. The theme is molecular cell biology and I want to propose something involving stem cell research. Any ideas?

Best answer:

Answer by midnightmoon62
If I could fund stem cell research, I would want to fund ways to make one unit of cord blood able to transplant an adult sized person, or ways to be able to store cord blood longer while keeping it viable.

I had a dual cord blood transplant last year for leukemia, so that area is important to me.

Your best bet is to seek for private grants or grants from private foundations.

The best resource for this is Foundation Center http://www.fdncenter.org . They have a very good database covering all organizations giving grants and you can find foundations that are interested in supporting your type of cause. However, it’s a subscription based website ($ 19.95 per month I think is the cheapest subscription price). But it certainly is worth the fee. You can subscribe one month, and make sure you get all the info you need and then stop the subscription.

What is a good resource for single mothers who need grants for continuing education?

Question by Lucy: What is a good resource for single mothers who need grants for continuing education?
I’m looking to go back to college, I graduated back in 2003. I’m a single mom and I work one full time job. I’ve been searching for grants that can help me further my education and I’ve applied for the pell grant and another one. But that leaves me about 5,000 short for school. I don’t want to have to apply for a loan because I know they check credit and that takes off points on my credit score. Does anyone know of any charities, business, government grants or scholarships that award or give money for college? I don’t know if it helps but my major is digital movie production.

If you have your bachelor’s degree already, you do not qualify for the Pell Grant at all. The Pell Grant pretty much pays for one degree. However, there are scholarships out there. If you are planning on attending graduate school, there is the research or graduate assistant programs which pays for your tuition and a monthly stipend. I will include some free resources below to find money for college. Good luck!

Question by sweet_sunshine_74: Where are good websites to go to for grants for teachers?
I’m an elementary tecaher and I was told it’s pretty easy to get grants to help fund materials, etc. for the classroom. (I teach at a charter school and our materials and equipment budget is practically nil). Anyone know good places to look to apply for grants?

Best answer:

Answer by DrIG
Is there a business associated with the school. Try them.

Also try the Bill and Melinda Gates foundation/ What materials do you need. If it is stationary supplies that are needed try local stationary stores such as Staples and local stores as well.

Ask the parents if they know of places that will contribute materials..

Make sure that you have the approval of the principal when asking for contributions.

Try stores the craft supply store for give aways
