Grant Crisis Q&A

Are the grants for single moms different than regular FAFSA financial aid?

1 Comment 07 May 2012

Question by : Are the grants for single moms different than regular FAFSA financial aid?
Do I need to apply for FAFSA to get the grants that OBAMA is talking about for single moms who want to go back to school? Or is that a separate program? Where can I get info on it?

Best answer:

Answer by Suba
I haven’t heard Obama say anything about special grants for single moms. What you’ve been seeing is like a scam. Single moms qualify for federal aid on the same qualifications as everyone else, income, assets and household size.

Pell grant information or any info on college financial aid?

1 Comment 06 May 2012

Question by confusedncurious: Pell grant information or any info on college financial aid?
I was pretty disappointed that I am most likely not able to qualify for the pell grant. I do not understand why, however I will live. How much is too much to make in order to be ineligible for the pell grant, if you are single with one dependent/child? And are there any other grants that help students go back to school? I just want to finish for promotion purposes and I am almost there! Thanks any info can help…

Grant Crisis Q&A

Okay, my question is reguarding pel grants and financial aide?

1 Comment 22 March 2012

Question by Tammy C: Okay, my question is reguarding pel grants and financial aide?
I am a 27 year old single mother of 2. When I was 18 and in foster care, I went to college and got financial aide, I did not take college seriously at the time, I just went because my foster parents told me that if I wanted to continue to live under their roof I had to go. Anyhow to make a long story short, I signed up for callses, but never went. Well 2 years ago, when I was 25, I signed back up for college and they told me that I was not eligable to attend unless I paid off what I opwed, so, I paid off what I owed, then I signed up for financial aide, but they told me that I was no eligable for financial aide. The state of Illinois approved me for financial aide, but the college in my district said that they would not honor that, I really want to go back to school so I can provide a better life than what I am now for me and my 2 children, but there is no way that I can afford to pay for college on the salary I make. Any suggestions?

I’d like into student loans. Sure, not as good as a grant, but at least it’s a way to go back to school.

where I can get financial help for disabled (grants, assistance) for home repairs?

2 Comments 15 March 2012

Question by nerikson69: where I can get financial help for disabled (grants, assistance) for home repairs?
I am a 36yo disabled father of 4 and am trying to find financial help, either through assistance or grants. I need help in repairing my home by (1) removal and disposal of ASBESTOS siding and siding replacement (2) add ramp entrances to front and back of my house, due to me being in wheelchair often (3) getting an inexpensive privacy fence put up on my property. If anyone has any places or people I can call to ask or that can help…that would be great!

Best answer:

Answer by Caveat Emptor
Replacing siding and installing fences has nothing to do with your disability, so you’re out of luck there. You MIGHT find some charitable organization that will assist with ramps.

Under what Opportunity Title in grants.gov can I find a grant to help individuals with financial hardships?

No Comments 07 February 2012

Question by captainespinosa: Under what Opportunity Title in grants.gov can I find a grant to help individuals with financial hardships?
Can anyone help me find the right Opportunity Tittle?

Answer by NotAnyoneYouKnow
Captain:

If you’re looking around grants.gov, you’ve missed the answer to your question – and unfortunately, that answer is that the government does not offer grants to assist individuals with financial hardship.

When you’re on the http://grants.gov page, click on “About Grants.gov” on the left hand side of the page. Now click on “Who is eligible for a grant?”, where you’ll find these two passages:

“ATTENTION! Grants.gov does not offer money for personal financial assistance or debt. If you are seeking personal financial assistance such as:

Social Security/Supplemental Security Income, Medicaid or State Social Services, please visit: http://www.GovBenefits.gov

Student Loans, please visit: http://www.Studentaid.ed.gov

Small Business Start-up Loans, please visit: http://www.sba.gov

This type of individual assistance is NOT available on this website.”

and

“We have all seen them, late night infomercials, websites, and reference guides, advertising “millions in free money” Don’t believe the hype! Although there are many grants on Grants.gov, few of them are available to individuals and none of them are available for personal financial assistance. To find an alphabetical listing of federal personal assistance visit USA.gov website’s Government Benefits, Grants, and Financial Aid page.”

As those passages explain, the government does not award grants for personal financial assistance – hardship or otherwise. What you are looking for is a government benefits program – and I’m sure you’ve heard of some of these before.

There are well-known programs like Veteran’s benefits, disaster relief, food stamps, medicaid and TANF (which used to be called welfare), and there are lesser-known, state programs, like LIHEAP (Low Income Home Energy Assistance Program), which help very low income households keep their electricity and heat turned on. For more info on the full range of government benefits programs, visit http://www.govbenefits.gov , or contact your local state Division of Family Services.

Good luck to you!

You need to begin by filling out the FAFSA. You can do it on-line here: http://www.fafsa.ed.gov (be careful of imitators – note the .gov)
You should do this right now as many schools have priority deadlines in early March. It is easiest to do after you and your parents have completed your 2010 tax returns.
