Grant from The Michael J. Fox Foundation to Dr. Samuel Young Will Provide Tools for Parkinson’s Drug Development

Jupiter, FL (PRWEB) May 03, 2012

Samuel M. Young, Jr., PhD, research group leader at the new Max Planck Florida Institute (MPFI), has received his first grant from The Michael J. Fox Foundation for Parkinson’s Research (MJFF). The grant will enable Dr. Young and colleagues to develop a technology that will help scientists working in drug development to research potential treatments that target LRRK2, a Parkinson’s-related gene. Globally, five million people have Parkinson’s disease.

“We are excited about receiving The Michael J. Fox Foundation grant, as these grants are competitive and MJFF is the world’s largest private funder of Parkinson’s research,” said Dr. Young, who directs MPFI’s Molecular Mechanisms of Synaptic Function research group. “We believe that the tools we develop will prove important in advancing Parkinson’s research.”

Translational researchers working in Parkinson’s disease have been hindered in studying the function of the LRRK2 gene in pre-clinical models of Parkinson’s. This has been due to difficulty in expressing this gene with commonly used neuroscience research tools known as recombinant viral vectors. Dr. Young will develop tools that will allow researchers to get around this problem.

Mutations in the gene for leucine-rich repeat kinase 2 (LRRK2) are among the most common genetic links to Parkinson’s disease yet discovered. LRRK2 has garnered much excitement among drug makers due to its reported protein kinase activity, which appears to be enhanced by Parkinson’s disease-causing mutations.

“We are delighted that The Michael J. Fox Foundation has awarded Dr. Young with a grant to lead this critical project,” said David Fitzpatrick, PhD, CEO and Scientific Director of MPFI. “This grant recognizes Dr. Young’s specialized expertise, as well as our Institute’s leadership role in neural circuit research.”

Recombinant viral vectors are used by scientists to deliver genetic material into cells. Viruses have evolved specialized molecular mechanisms to efficiently transport their genomes inside the cells they infect. To create the vector, viruses are bioengineered to strip their viral genome or most of their viral genome, which renders them harmless. This enables them to carry transgene expression cassettes to express a gene of interest. The transgene expression cassette is a fragment of DNA that carries the regulatory elements necessary for cells to express specific genes within a cell or organism.

As the principal investigator of the project, Dr. Young will work with collaborators at other institutions to generate the optimal expression cassette to express LRRK2.

Dr. Young has specialized training that makes him the ideal investigator for this project. After training in virology and in recombinant viral vectors during his doctoral studies, Dr. Young switched fields and became a post-doctoral neuroscience researcher, learning electrophysiology techniques. He carried out a second post-doctoral position, gaining further experience with advanced electrophysiological techniques as well as calcium imaging. Using this unique training, which combines techniques in molecular, electrophysiological and biophysical methods, Dr. Young and his group at MPFI study the molecular mechanisms regulating synaptic function. Understanding these mechanisms is critical because the major causes of brain diseases are due to synaptic dysfunction.

Since Dr. Young’s arrival at MPFI in 2010, he and his team have made significant progress in their research. After finding that most transgene expression cassettes were not optimized for high level expression for use in neuroscience research, the team, including Dr. Monica Montesinos and graduate student Zuxin Chen, developed and published a research manuscript describing a novel expression cassette known as “pUNISHER” for neuroscience applications. The cassette, which can be used inside a living organism (in vivo) or in cell culture (in vitro), has the potential to help the research of scientists studying the molecular mechanisms of brain function, and to ultimately be used in translational research on disorders such as Parkinson’s, Huntington’s and Alzheimer’s diseases.

About Max Planck Florida Institute – The first institute outside of Germany created by the Max Planck Society, Max Planck Florida Institute brings together leading scientists representing a diversity of scientific disciplines and approaches in order to seek fundamental answers about brain function and neural circuits. These circuits form the complex synaptic networks of the brain, which determine who we are, how we think, and how we behave. Understanding of these circuits is still in its infancy. MPFI seeks to provide new insight into understanding the functional organization of the nervous system, its capacity to produce perception, thought, language, memory, emotion, and action – and how it goes awry in neurological, neurodevelopmental and psychological disorders. MPFI meets this challenge by forging links between different levels of analysis—genetic, molecular, cellular, circuit, and behavioral—and developing new technologies that make cutting edge scientific discoveries possible. The Institute currently has six research groups, each focusing on a different aspect and approach to neural circuit research, and will add three more groups when its new state-of-the-art research facility opens in summer 2012. EnergyLink Advise Loft Insulation Is The Best Way To Avoid Centrica’s Predicted Price Rises In 2012

Free Insulation

(PRWEB UK) 22 November 2011

After announcing 850 job losses in the company’s service business, in a statement released through the Press Association on 17th November, British Gas parent Centrica warned its shareholders this week that profits for 2011 will be slightly lower than expected, blaming “unusually warm weather experienced in the UK in recent months”.

Centrica’s profit warning in its Interim Management Statement, released on its website at 7am on 17th November, doesn’t rule out further price rises, following those announced by the ‘big six’ suppliers in the summer, and the possibility of rising energy bills in 2012 remains.

According to industry specialists EnergyLink, with another cold winter predicted for 2011 now is the time to make energy saving measures, such as Loft Insulation and Cavity Wall Insulation, and to take advantage of Loft Insulation Grants to protect against rising costs and falling temperatures.

Loft Insulation remains one of the best energy efficient methods of retaining heat and reducing bills and helps to prevent up to 25% of heat being lost through a home’s roof. Meanwhile, Cavity Wall Insulation provides another cost-effective method of retaining heat within a home and can help to prevent up to 35% of heat being lost through a home’s walls, estimate EnergyLink.

A household with both Loft Insulation and Cavity Wall Insulation can save up to £265 per year and Cavity Wall and Loft Insulation Grants, as part of the Government’s Carbon Emissions Reduction Target (CERT), are available to all homeowners to cover up to 100% of the cost.

To qualify for a 100% free insulation grant, homeowners and private tenants must be aged 70 and above, or in receipt of certain benefits, tax credits or allowances. While all home owners and private tenants qualify for a partial insulation grant, regardless of income or circumstances, of between 40 to 70% of the cost.

As well as home insulation, EnergyLink encourage exploring other energy efficient measures as ways to cut the cost of energy bills and fight against price rises. These include using draught excluders, fitting thermostatic controls, having a boiler serviced regularly and to switch energy provider if there’s a better deal available.

Goodwill® and Walmart Foundation Connect Veterans with Job Success

Rockville, MD (PRWEB) May 14, 2012

A new program, funded by the Walmart Foundation and administered by Goodwill®, will empower military veterans with the tools they need to find employment, advance in their careers and ensure long-term financial stability for their families. The Walmart Foundation’s grant of $ 1 million will support the program, known as Operation: GoodJobs, at Goodwill agencies in the three key markets of Austin, Houston and Tacoma through 2013. Together, Goodwill and the Walmart Foundation will collaborate with a broad array of community partners to help ensure that veterans and their families have every opportunity to succeed.

“Everyone is struggling to find good jobs these days, but veterans face particular challenges and it is our duty as a nation to support these young men and women who are having difficulties transitioning back into civilian life,” said Jim Gibbons, president and CEO of Goodwill Industries International. “We at Goodwill believe it is absolutely imperative that we give each of these veterans every opportunity they need to thrive.”

Operation: GoodJobs assists veterans with job training and placement, but also plans for each participant’s continued success by designing individualized, holistic plans that support the needs of their entire family and helps ensure economic security for participants and their families in the long-term. Each participant in Operation: GoodJobs will receive a complete career assessment and an individualized development plan that will include a range of family needs, from basic needs like nutrition, shelter and child care, to specific job training identified in the assessment process.

“As one of the nation’s largest private employers of veterans and those on active duty, we share Goodwill’s vision of a country where every veteran has a chance to succeed economically and support his or her family,” said retired U.S. Army Brigadier General Gary Profit, senior director of military programs at Walmart. “Making that vision a reality starts today through Operation: GoodJobs. These young men and women stood up for us, and now it’s our turn to stand up for them.”

Veterans return home as proven leaders who have demonstrated their work ethic and commitment to achieving results as part of a team. Operation: GoodJobs will help to provide the necessary career counseling, resume help and skills training, so that veterans can obtain employment positions and in turn, employers can realize their skills and talents and match those skills with available employment opportunities.

If you know of a veteran who would benefit from these services or have questions, please call 800-GOODWILL.

Background: Our Returning Heroes

As the military works to withdraw troops from Operation Enduring Freedom (OEF) and Operation Iraqi Freedom (OIF) — two conflicts that represent the longest-running military engagements in U.S. history — the need for a continuum of coordinated, integrated services for veterans and their families is at an all-time high. Too many service members returning from Iraq and Afghanistan are finding it difficult to secure employment so they can continue their service and support their families. In 2010, there were more than 20 million veterans in the United States. That number is increasing every day as troops come home. Under current plans, at least 100,000 men and women will leave military service in the next five years. This news is troubling as a stubbornly bleak job market translates to high unemployment for veterans, especially those ages 18-24, who face an employment rate of more than 20 percent — more than twice the national average.

AED Precautions You Have to Consider

No Comments 16 May 2012

The precaution and proper use of defibrillators is one important chapter, and it is included in the standardized curriculum of the AED basic training course . The American Heart Association, the American Red Cross and the National Safety Council approved and published these precautions for the safety of both the patient and the user of the AED. After the occurrence of the incident you have to look for an AED emergency kit right away.

It is likely that you will find one at the building entrance if you are in a public place or building, because this is the standard place for these kits. Make sure you are familiarized with the contents of the kit. You’ll probably find two pads, a CPR barrier mask, a piece of cloth or a towel, scissors, a pair of gloves and possibly a razor. So go though these automated external defibrillator precautions in order to avoid other accidents from happening.

1. First of all, check the patient for pulse. If you cannot sense the pulse you may proceed, and let the AED determine if there are heartbeats at all. In most of the cases the AED will indicate if there is a pulse and if defibrillation is needed.

2. You might want to try to perform a cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) before taking any further action. But make sure that the AED device is not analyzing the rhythm. This may cause some unpleasant accidents. Many AED devices possess motion and CPR detector, but you won’t have time to determine that in a crisis.

3. The AED device should be used with great care if the patient is in a moving means of transportation. The movement of a vehicle may affect the analysis the AED makes, which won’t be accurate and consequently it will perform incorrect tasks.

However, if employed while transporting the patient to hospital, stop and take the pulse several times and do monitoring checks with the help of the AED. Some AED models are smart enough to distinguish between external movement and cardiac movement.

4. Beware of water!

Before performing the defibrillation, make sure the chest of the patient is completely dry. In the AED kit you will find a piece of cloth or a towel that is set there exactly with the purpose of drying the patient’s chest. Sweat or water spots make certain parts of the chest be less resistant and the defibrillation might not be very effective. Besides, the presence of water may lead to local burns. Also make sure that the patient has no contact with water. It the patient is in a pool or outside, in wet weather, take the patient under a safe shelter and dry the chest before taking any further action.

However, do not use alcohol to dry the chest of the patient. As you may probably know, alcohol is very flammable.

5. Take a close look at the patient’s chest. It should be free of nitroglycerine patches or any other patches or materials. Get rid of any patches before performing the defibrillation. The nitroglycerine patches may cause explosion when in contact with the AED pads.

6. Make sure the patient does not lie on a conductive surface like sheet metal or metal bleachers. These conductors may transmit the shock to other people that are in the patient’s neighborhood.

7. Keep your hands off the patient while performing the defibrillation.

Also make sure no-one else touches the patient. If these rules are not respected, you or others might get the electric shock. Touching the patient while the AED performs the analysis will not give accurate results.

8. An AED should not be used on children under the age of 8, or under 55 pounds.

Some AEDs are not able to adjust to the low-energy settings that are required for children. Anyway, there are several AED devices on the market that may resuscitate even children under 8. So check the packaging of the device before using it.

9. Take a look at the environment where you will perform the resuscitation!

You shouldn’t perform a defibrillation if you are among flammable supplies such as gasoline or free-flowing oxygen. Also, the AED should be used with prudence when there is strong electromagnetic interference (EMI). The AED might detect false cardiac rhythm when there is electromagnetic interference.

10. Careful with the cell phones and portable radios- the waves cause trouble!

It is highly important to notify an ambulance of the incident and the cell phone is the most effective device, but make sure you keep all cell phones at least 6 feet away from the patient and the AED. The cell phone may influence the analysis. Radios have the same effect on the AED, so keep all radios away.

Aveda Chapel Hill Institute is Showplace of Recycled Building Products

No Comments 14 May 2012

Few businesses are as well known as Aveda, maker of plant-derived beauty products, for connecting ecological sustainability and corporate success. In addition to their ecologically based salon and lifestyle products, their new institute on West Franklin Street is a veritable showplace of building products made with environmentally sustainable and recycled material. Buying products made from recycled material helps support recycling programs.

Upon entering the facility, one is not assaulted with the chemical blast common to hair and personal care salons. Karen Potter, Marketing and Events Coordinator for Aveda Institute Chapel Hill, relates what a healthy difference it makes to work in an enivironment that is not full of volatile organic compounds (VOC’s), “It has really made me conscious of the smell of synthetics and aerosols.” Karen’s so inspired, she’s converted to non-toxic, aerosol and synthetic-free alternatives in her home. Pale wisps of laminated bamboo called Plyboo cover the reception desks and display counters. All bamboo used to make Plyboo comes from managed forests in China where it is harvested by hand, minimizing impact on the local environment.

“Dakota Burl” covers the countertop at the guest services’ station. The marble-looking material is made from sunflower seed hulls, a waste product of the sunflower seed processing industry in the Dakotas and northern Minnesota. Crushed hulls are bonded with a non-polluting urethane resin to form this durable, attractive countertop. The Infinity Modular carpet tiles in the foyer can be taken up, replaced piece by piece as needed and recycled again.

Marmoleum flooring swirls beneath the colmetology clinic and nail care area. It is an update of the old linoleum made from biodegradable, natural renewable products including jute, wood flour and limestone. A sealant hardens the Marmoleum, but leaves it with a slightly springy feel, making it more forgiving on employees’ feet than conventional flooring.

Last but not least, the confetti-looking flooring (ECOsurfaces) in the break room is made from recycled rubber tires and is in turn completely recyclable.Stroll into Aveda for a visual sampling of these great, environmentally sound products, especially if you have a building or remodeling project in mind. While here, notice the high indoor air quality as well, Buying recycled isn’t only for an upscale salon; these building materials and many others are available for building healthy homes and businesses.

Nashville, TN (PRWEB) May 02, 2012

The International Songwriting Competition (ISC), the world’s foremost global songwriting event, is pleased to announce its 2011 winners. ISC’s Grand Prize is awarded to New Zealand native Kimbra for her song “Cameo Lover,” entered in the Pop/Top 40 category. Kimbra also holds the distinction of having won First Place in the Pop/Top 40 category in 2010 for her song “Settle Down.” The Grand Prize winner takes home $ 25,000 in cash (US) and an additional $ 25,000 in merchandise and services.

Called “the songwriting competition to take note of” by the New York Times, ISC was

established in 2002 and awards more than $ 150,000 in cash and prizes to amateur and

professional songwriters around the globe. This year was the most competitive of any year

in terms of quantity and quality of entries, and winners were selected from over 16,000 songs

submitted from 112 countries worldwide. Judges included iconic artists Tom Waits, Jeff Beck,

McCoy Tyner, Kelly Clarkson, Janelle Monae, Ozzy Osbourne, Lucinda Williams, Tori Amos,

Wynonna, Keane, and many more. In addition to the high-profile artists, the roster of judges

also included five record label presidents as well as other industry leaders, offering songwriters

the unprecedented opportunity to have their music heard by influential decision-makers. See

below for the complete list of judges.

For a complete list of 2011 ISC winners and to hear the winning songs, go to http://www.songwritingcompetition.com/winners

Winning ISC’s highest honor is New Zealand’s latest export, the quirky and wonderfully eclectic artist Kimbra. Kimbra has recently exploded onto the international music charts as the featured singer on Australian artist Gotye’s current #1 hit song, “Somebody That I Used To Know.” Her recent TV performances with Gotye on Jimmy Kimmel Live and Saturday Night Live were electrifying and introduced her to the US public, fortifying her meteoric rise to fame.

Only 22 years old, Kimbra began writing songs and performing at the age of 10. Spending her early years gigging around her native New Zealand, it was only once Kimbra borrowed a small eight-track recorder from her school’s music department that her songwriting blossomed in earnest. Since then, she has made enormous strides in her career. Her debut album, Vows, was released in 2011 in New Zealand and Australia, and in its first week of release the album charted at #3 in New Zealand and #5 in Australia (peaking at #4 on the ARIA Charts). The album will be released in the US and Canada on May 22.

Accolades include winning the 2011 NZ Critics’ Choice awards and also the Best Female Artist for “Cameo Lover” at the 2011 ARIA awards.

Even at such a young age, Kimbra already possesses great maturity and musical sophistication. Candace Avery, the Founder and Director of ISC, says this of Kimbra:

“We first became aware of Kimbra in 2010 when she entered ISC and won First Place in the Pop/Top 40 category with her song ‘Settle Down.’ At that time we knew she was one of those artists who had “it”. As a songwriter, her eclectic and somewhat quirky songwriting made her stand out. As an artist, she brings her songs to life with her unique vocal styling and compelling stage presence. Kimbra is rapidly establishing herself as a significant talent and a fresh and exciting new voice on the international music scene. We are proud to have her as our 2011 Grand Prize winner.”

Histogen Wins Motion for Summary Judgment in Patent Case, Defeating SkinMedica’s Claims

San Diego, CA (PRWEB) November 28, 2011

Histogen, Inc., a regenerative medicine company developing solutions based on the products of cells grown under simulated embryonic conditions, today announced that the United States District Court for the Southern District of California has granted the Company’s motion for summary judgment of non-infringement of patents in the lawsuit that SkinMedica, Inc. filed against Histogen in 2009.

In the ruling issued on November 21, 2011, the court addressed the patents in suit, United States Patent Nos. 6,372,494 (titled “Methods of making conditioned cell culture medium compositions”) and 7,118,746 (titled “Conditioned cell culture medium compositions and methods of use”). The court found that Histogen’s products do not infringe, and dismissed all of the patent infringement allegations against Histogen.

“After nearly three years of patent litigation, we are excited to have confirmation that Histogen’s technology is unique, and free from any patent rights that SkinMedica has,” said Dr. Gail K. Naughton, Histogen CEO and Chairman of the Board. “This outcome was signaled by the court in its claim construction order earlier this year, and we are happy to now have this matter officially behind us.”

Commenting on the Company’s business strategy going forward, Histogen President David Nassif stated, “The pathway is now clear for us to re-start our skin care business, using our proprietary conditioned medium in an array of cosmetic products. We are already talking with potential partners and distributors in a number of countries. Any residual litigation matters with SkinMedica will not prevent or delay us.”

The federal court in San Diego granted the motion in case 09-CV-122 JLS (NLS) following a hearing on November 4, 2011. A copy of the Order is available upon request.

About Histogen

Histogen, launched in 2007, seeks to redefine regenerative medicine by developing a series of high value products that do not contain embryonic stem cells or animal components. Through Histogen’s proprietary bioreactors that mimic the embryonic environment, including low oxygen and suspension, newborn cells are encouraged to naturally produce the vital proteins and growth factors from which the Company has developed its rich product portfolio. Histogen has two product families – a proprietary liquid complex of embryonic-like proteins and growth factors, and a human Extracellular Matrix (ECM) material, ExCeltrix.
